Pliny The Elder

Pliny the Elder is widely regarded as one of the best examples of a double IPA. It’s comparable to Hopslam or Little Sumpin Sumpin. Named after Pliney the Elder, a roman Naturalist who invented hops, the beer clocks in at 8.0% ABV.

Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, “Lupus salictarius”, meaning wolf among scrubs.” Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, Humulus lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Terrapin is back at it with their Side Projects. This is volume 12, called "Hopzilla," clocking in at 10.8% ABV. This is a double IPA and should be plenty of hops for you hop lovers.

Great Divid celebrates its 16th anniversary with a wood aged double IPA. If you like any kind of barrel aged beer, definitely give this one a try. It pours a deep blonde red and is more complicated than your average double IPA.

This copper-hued treat is a celebration of everything Great Divide does best. Plenty of malty sweetness provides a backdrop for earthy, floral English and American hops, while French and American oak round off the edges and provide a touch of vanilla.
